Terbutaline for Preterm Labor

       Terbutaline comes from a class of drugs that are known as beta-adrenergic receptor agonists. They are also known as beta agonists and they aid in the stimulation of beta receptors in the body, including the ones that are located in the muscles in the uterus. The muscles relax due to the stimulation and this helps in the delay of preterm labor. It has not yet been proven that the drug can prevent premature labor that has not started. It also cannot delay preterm labor for long periods. However, the drug delays the labor long enough so that other medications can be administered to the mother so that they can help develop the premature baby’s lungs. Delay of labor can also be long enough so that the mother can be transported to a hospital that has NICU, which is a unit of a hospital that specializes in the care of newborn babies.
